A strong Latakia tobacco is what I expected and that's exactly what I got, so no complaints. After initially trying this in a narrow billiard for the first two-three bowls smoked in an enclosed area, I tried it in a couple wider gauge pipes, a Custombilt with a more conical burn chamber and a BBB Two Thousand with a similar, though smaller bowl, out on my rear deck. There is little balance of flavors in that this blend is a showcase of Latakia with the other components only serving to keep it from being too monochromatic. Great for an everyday smoke if you like latakia. I also get some almonds, vanilla, and a bit of anise/licorice. Recommended. Very nice, i gotta get me some more of this. Though heavy on the latakia its interesting how the orientals and burleys play in the background with every sip. You either love Latakia or you seldom partake in it. Not so fast! I smoked some the next day and I noted that it smelled similar to being in smokehouse. The plug cut provides a very slow, peaceful, perfect, cool smoke. Like someone dumped a wheelbarrow full of incense onto a bonfire. The flavors actually varied through out the bowl ranging from smokey to earthy and very lightly sweet. Still, it's a pretty impressive cake and it pairs best with a cup of two day old black coffee (which I'm also fond of), or a guinness. when the tin was opened but that subsided to the sour apple and plum notes being stronger, especially after transferring to a jar. No pretense is made about subtle reflections but instead, a robust presentation of flavors that complement one another well. I had ordered the Virginia sampler about 3 years ago, and did like the Pirate cake best so ordered an 8 oz. The unlit note gives more than a suggestion of lots of Latakia, so on with the actual smoke: It comes as no surprise that the leading flavour's the smoky Latakia. The crumble is easy to break, easy to pack, easy to keep it lit, smokes really cool, full taste from the very beggining till the end. Very few relights, and is just heavenly. Update 01/19/06- One thing that wasn't put in my original review is that Pirate Kake is a wonderful DGT tobacco, in fact sometimes I think I prefer to smoke it after a few hours left in the pipe. This lat balm is in a very nice kake, has amazing flavor and depth, and has smart branding to boot. E99 is not as sweet and doesn't bring much Oriental and is very one dimensional. A few friends and I recently tried this blend. The tobacco seems dry enough when being rubbed out but is hard to keep lit without drying. Not an all day smoke,. I believe this is the same blend as BF sans the rum. The scent and taste are both compkex. For latakia lovers this and "Heart of Darkness" are hard to beat! It's not unusual to get a two hour smoke out of this combination. The note is brighter and more lively than others,which serves to create it's own bold, lusty personality. A strong Latakia tobacco is what I expected and that's exactly what I got, so no complaints. After initially trying this in a narrow billiard for the first two-three bowls smoked in an enclosed area, I tried it in a couple wider gauge pipes, a Custombilt with a more conical burn chamber and a BBB Two Thousand with a similar, though smaller bowl, out on my rear deck. There is little balance of flavors in that this blend is a showcase of Latakia with the other components only serving to keep it from being too monochromatic. Great for an everyday smoke if you like latakia. I also get some almonds, vanilla, and a bit of anise/licorice. Recommended. Very nice, i gotta get me some more of this. Though heavy on the latakia its interesting how the orientals and burleys play in the background with every sip. You either love Latakia or you seldom partake in it. Not so fast! I smoked some the next day and I noted that it smelled similar to being in smokehouse. The plug cut provides a very slow, peaceful, perfect, cool smoke.
